Long-term, Kennedy McMann's role as Joni, a young lawyer with obsessive-compulsive disorder, is going to be the show's best selling point. Shaun will need a lawyer after being charged with malpractice at the end of episode 15. At first, it seems like Janet (Felicity Huffman) will represent him in court.
But there is something about Joni that makes Shaun believe in her, even though she is young and hasn't done much before. He sees a part of himself in her and knows that a diagnosis can make a lot of people think less of someone. He is putting massive faith in her, and we are fairly optimistic there will be a favourable outcome here. If there isn't, will that be nearly as interesting of a premise for a spin-off show? Right now, it seems reasonable to wonder that.
In the end, remember that we might have to wait a while to find out whether The Good Lawyer gets the go-ahead. After all, ABC has until May to make a decision. We like the idea and are always up for a good courtroom drama. We think that's even more true when you have some inspiring angle, like this show seems to have.
